BBQ Humor & Fun Facts: Ribs, Brisket, And Backyard Memories

A Tribute to a Marine Sergeant Major, plus BBQ Trivia, Dad Jokes, and Grilling Wisdom for the Whole Family

As summer settles in and grills across America begin firing up, this week’s Friday Humor & Fun Facts celebrates one of the great traditions of family life – barbecue. This post is inspired by a special man who taught me far more than how to cook ribs and brisket.

A Marine, A Grill, and Lessons that Last a Lifetime

This post is dedicated to my father-in-law, Horace “Chuck” Brown. Chuck was a Marine who achieved the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major. He served multiple combat tours during the Vietnam War and once humbly shared with me how he received a battlefield promotion for his heroism under fire. Yet despite those accomplishments, one of the greatest lessons he ever taught me had nothing to do with military service – it was barbecue.

Every Fourth of July, our family gathered at his home in Palm Desert, California. BBQ ribs, brisket, and chicken were usually on the menu. During my first visit, Chuck invited me to help with the grilling. Although I had cooked over campfires as a Boy Scout, I quickly realized I knew very little about real barbecue.

Patiently and without criticism, Chuck taught me the fundamentals. Over time, I became reasonably competent at the grill – though I am still far from being a pitmaster. On the bright side, I am proud to report no lawsuits have resulted from my cooking.

For those wondering, I still prefer charcoal briquets over gas and enjoy cooking with indirect heat, keeping the coals on one side of the grill and the meat on the other.

1. Barbecue Has Ancient Roots

The word “barbecue” comes from the Caribbean term “barbacoa,” a method of slow-cooking meat over a raised wooden platform.

2. BBQ Is A Worldwide Tradition

Americans don’t have a monopoly on great barbecue. Countries such as Argentina, South Africa, South Korea, and Japan all have their own unique grilling traditions.

3. Science Makes BBQ Delicious

That mouthwatering brown crust on grilled meat comes from something called the Maillard reaction, a chemical process that creates complex flavors when food is cooked at high temperatures.

4. Some BBQ Parties Are Massive

The largest barbecue ever recorded took place in Nuevo León, Mexico, where more than 45,000 people participated. That’s a lot of burgers, ribs, and potato salad.

5. BBQ Can Be Surprisingly Expensive

The world’s most expensive barbecue grill is reportedly the BeefEater Gold-Plated Grill, with a price tag of approximately $165,000. At that price, it had better cook the food and wash the dishes.

What Stepdads and Grill Masters Have in Common

Being a stepdad and being a grill master have a lot in common:

  • Both require patience.

  • Both require preparation.

  • Both occasionally involve putting out fires.

  • Both work best when you don’t overreact.

  • And in both cases, people usually notice only when something goes wrong.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just Good Food

Whether you’re grilling burgers, smoking brisket, or simply enjoying time with family, remember that some of life’s best memories happen around a backyard grill. For me, barbecue will always bring back memories of a Marine Sergeant Major who taught me much more than cooking. He taught me patience, humility, and the value of passing knowledge to the next generation.

And if your burgers get a little overcooked this weekend, just remember:

They’re not burned – they’re extra seasoned.
