AI And Our Children: Is It Changing How They Learn? – Part I

How AI can Help - or Hinder - your Child’s Learning

The growing role of AI in children’s education is already changing how students research, write, study, and solve problems.


Students can ask AI to explain an algebra problem, help them understand a difficult concept, brainstorm ideas, practice a foreign language, develop study questions, or assist with research for a term paper. What once required a trip to the library or hours searching online can sometimes be accomplished in minutes.

That’s an extraordinary advantage.

It’s also the source of one of the biggest questions facing parents and educators:

If AI makes finding answers easier, will children still develop the skills needed to find, evaluate, and create answers themselves?

The answer isn’t simply yes or no.

Research suggests AI can improve learning when it’s used intentionally. However, when students offload too much intellectual work to AI, they can produce better assignments without necessarily becoming better thinkers.

For parents and stepdads, understanding that distinction may be more useful than deciding whether AI is simply “good” or “bad” for education.

THE BIG QUESTION: Is AI helping our children think – or simply helping them finish? The educational value of AI may depend less on whether a child uses it and more on what the child asks AI to do.

AI Can Give Students a Powerful Learning Partner

There are legitimate reasons to be excited about AI in education.

Imagine a child struggling with algebra after school. A parent may not remember how to solve the equation, and the teacher may not be available at 9 p.m. An AI tutor can explain the problem step by step and then try a different approach if the first explanation doesn’t make sense.

A student learning Spanish can practice a conversation. A child studying history can explore competing viewpoints. A student preparing for an exam can generate practice questions based on material already studied.

For children who need extra help, that could be enormously valuable.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) s Digital Education Outlook 2026 concludes that generative AI can support learning when it’s used with clear educational goals. However, it also warns that simply outsourcing work to AI can improve assignment performance without producing corresponding learning gains.

Some Potential Educational Benefits

Used appropriately, AI can help students:

  • Receive additional explanations when they don’t understand a concept.

  • Get personalized practice based on their individual needs.

  • Brainstorm ideas and possible approaches to assignments.

  • Identify topics requiring additional research.

  • Practice languages and communication skills.

  • Generate study questions and quizzes.

  • Receive immediate feedback.

  • Explore different perspectives on a subject.

  • Get additional educational assistance when individual tutoring isn’t available.

That last point deserves attention. A family able to hire private tutors has traditionally had educational options another family may not have. Widely available AI tutoring could potentially narrow part of that gap.

However, access to the technology doesn’t automatically mean children know how to use it effectively.

Research Can Become Much Faster

Consider something generations of students have experienced: writing a term paper.

Traditionally, students might spend hours searching library catalogs, books, databases, journals, and websites just to become familiar enough with a subject to begin writing.

AI can dramatically accelerate those early stages.

Suppose a high school student has been assigned a paper on America’s entry into World War I. AI could help the student identify major arguments, suggest research questions, explain unfamiliar terminology, identify opposing viewpoints, and develop search terms for locating credible primary and secondary sources.

That could leave the student with more time for the intellectually valuable work:

  • reading the sources,
  • comparing evidence,
  • deciding what’s credible,
  • forming an opinion, and
  • constructing an argument.

In that situation, AI hasn’t replaced research. It has made parts of the research process more efficient.

AI can Shorten the Search without Shortening the Learning

There’s an important difference between using AI to find where to look and using AI to decide what to think. Faster research can help if you redirect the time saved to reading, evaluating evidence, questioning sources, and developing conclusions.

But the same assignment could be completed another way.

The student could enter the teacher’s instructions into an AI system and ask it to develop the thesis, identify the evidence, construct the argument, write the paper, and polish the final draft.

The student might receive an excellent grade.

But how much did the student learn?

What Happens When AI Does the Thinking?

This is where the educational debate becomes more complicated.

Learning has never been entirely about producing the correct answer.

Students learn when they struggle to understand a difficult paragraph, determine whether a source is trustworthy, organize scattered ideas, discover a weakness in an argument, rewrite a confusing sentence, or realize their original conclusion was wrong.

Some of that struggle is productive.

The OECD warns that students can produce higher-quality work while using general-purpose AI without achieving corresponding learning gains. It describes a risk of “meta-cognitive laziness” when students offload too much cognitive effort to AI. Some studies reviewed by the OECD found that advantages students experienced while using AI disappeared – and sometimes reversed – when they later had to perform without it.

That doesn’t mean using AI automatically damages critical thinking.

Properly structured AI use can encourage students to reason, question, argue, and reflect.

The difference is how the technology is used.

AI Assistant or AI Substitute?

AI as an assistant: “Help me understand this subject so I can develop my argument.” AI as a substitute: “Develop my argument and write it for me.” Both approaches may produce a finished assignment. Only one keeps the student responsible for most of the thinking.”

Critical Thinking May Be the Skill Most at Stake

Critical thinking isn’t simply knowing facts. It includes asking questions, evaluating evidence, recognizing assumptions, comparing explanations, identifying bias, and deciding whether a conclusion is justified.

Those abilities require practice.

If children routinely ask AI for the answer before wrestling with the question themselves, they risk becoming dependent on the tool.

However, AI can also be used in exactly the opposite way.

Instead of asking for an answer, students can use it to challenge their own answers.

For example:

  • “Here’s my argument. What’s the strongest argument against it?”

  • “What assumptions am I making?”

  • “Which parts of my reasoning are weak?”

  • “What evidence would contradict my conclusion?”

  • “Give me two different explanations for this event.”

  • “Don’t give me the answer. Ask me questions that will help me solve the problem myself.”

Those prompts require students to remain intellectually engaged.

The research in this area is still developing, so we should be careful about sweeping conclusions. However, one principle is becoming increasingly clear:

AI doesn’t have to eliminate critical thinking. How we teach children to use it will make a tremendous difference.

Writing Is Also a Form of Thinking

Parents shouldn’t overlook another concern.

Writing isn’t merely putting words on paper. Writing forces us to organize our thoughts.

Anyone who has struggled to explain an idea in writing has probably experienced this. Halfway through a paragraph, you suddenly realize your argument doesn’t make sense. Perhaps you’re missing evidence. Maybe two ideas don’t connect. Sometimes you discover you don’t understand the subject as well as you thought.

That struggle is part of writing.

If AI routinely turns a student’s rough thoughts into polished essays, the student may lose some of that intellectual exercise.

Spelling and grammar tools didn’t eliminate the need to teach writing. Calculators didn’t eliminate the need to understand mathematics. Likewise, AI shouldn’t eliminate the need for children to learn how to organize ideas, construct arguments, and communicate in their own voices.

The challenge, then, isn’t keeping AI out of education. It’s teaching children when to use it – and when they need to do the intellectual work themselves.

That responsibility doesn’t belong to children alone. As AI changes how students complete their work, teachers and parents will also have to reconsider how we determine whether genuine learning has taken place.
