Top Tips For Taking Children To Weddings

So you’ve been invited to a loved one’s wedding to remember! While some couples will make it known their wedding is an adults-only affair, others will leave the option open and let their guests decide on if they want to bring their little ones or not.

Considering weddings are formal affairs that may go on for hours at a time, some parents may be wondering if they should truly bring their children to the event. Here are a few helpful tips for you to consider when making this important decision.

#1 Confirm With the Bride and Groom First

It’s important to have a discussion with the bride and groom prior to assuming your child is invited.

Remember, just because you’re invited doesn’t mean you can necessarily bring others to attend the wedding.

This is why many couples ask guests to make reservations. For example, the bride and groom may have a certain head count when it comes to seating, food and refreshments.

Therefore, always make sure in advance your child was added to the guest list.

#2 Set Expectations for Your Child

It will also be important to sit down and have discussions with your child. If they’re included in the event it will be important to go over with them how important their role will be as a ring bearer, flower girl, etc.

Also make sure they attend rehearsals and even practice for the wedding at home. If your child will be a guest in attendance alongside you, it will be even more important to let them know how important the event is to the bride and groom.

To set clear expectations, discuss the meaning of marriage, accurately describe the parts of the wedding, its duration and acceptable wedding etiquette. Such talks can help to set the tone for your child.

It may even help to alleviate fidgeting in a child who will need to stay seated for longer than normal.

#3 Prepare Baby’s Schedule in Advance

While babies and their needs are often unpredictable it may help to try and shift baby’s schedule around a few months prior to the wedding. For instance, feeding, napping and changing that is required during the middle of the wedding ceremony could cause disruptions.

Make sure your little one has had plenty of sleep so they’re not irritable during the event. You could even ask the couple well in advance for an aisle seat or another convenient location just in case you need to step away at an opportune moment due to a baby who is upset or who may need to be changed right away.

#4 Bring your own Activities

Also bring quiet activities your child can engage in to keep them preoccupied at the event. For example, you can bring crayons and paper, books or other small toys that will keep their attention.

You can even bring a convenient electronic device and let your little one wear headphones as they watch a favorite animated movie or show. Also, don’t forget about carrying a few snacks as well.

While there may be plenty of food at the reception, your child may still need a snack before them to quiet their stomachs before the rest of the festivities begin.

Lastly, remember to have fun and enjoy the wedding celebration! While it may be a faux pas to bring children to some weddings (especially when the couple expressly stated against it), more than likely your favorite couple will be more than happy your little one is in attendance and you took the time and care to ensure your child was on their best behavior during the event.
