Enjoy this inspirational fable with a twist…
One day a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The farmer frantically thought what to do. With no solution, the farmer regretfully concluded he should give up the idea of rescue, and simply fill in the well. Hopefully the poor animal would not suffer too much, he tried to persuade himself.
The farmer and his neighbors began to shovel earth into the well. When the donkey realized what was happening he wailed and struggled, but then, to everyone’s relief, the noise stopped.
The farmer looked down and was astonished by what he saw. The donkey was still alive and progressing upward. The donkey discovered that by shaking off the dirt instead of letting it cover him, he could step on top of the earth. Soon the donkey was able to step up over the edge of the well and he happily trotted off.
Life tends to shovel dirt on top of each of us from time to time. The trick is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.
~ Aesop
And now the rest of the story…
The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
The moral of the story…
“When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.”
P.S. No donkeys were harmed in the telling of this fable. 😀
