The Help – A Powerful Story Of Courage And Change ~ Movie Review

A Must-See Film with Heart
This weekend, the Pretty Lady and I watched The Help. If you haven’t seen it yet, you absolutely should. I may not have Roger Ebert’s credentials, but I’m 99% certain you and your significant other will feel just as moved and entertained as we did. I’d feel surprised if this film doesn’t earn nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress.
A Story of Courage and Truth
The Help tells a story about courage and the strength to speak up when the world insists you stay silent. The title refers to African American maids who work for white families in the segregated South. The film reminded me of my Aunt Mamie, who worked as a domestic for a family in Omaha during the 1960s and 70s. May God bless her memory.
Based on a Best-Selling Novel
The film is based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel. It takes place in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, during the Civil Rights Movement. The story follows Skeeter Phelan, a recent Ole Miss graduate and aspiring journalist. It also follows Aibileen Clark, a wise and warm-hearted maid, and her best friend, Minny Jackson. Minny is fiercely loyal and outspoken.

A Vivid Portrait of Injustice
The movie paints a clear picture of racial divisions in the South. It shows how Black maids worked in white households with little recognition. You’ll see Hilly Holbrook’s cruelty and social power. You’ll also see Celia Foote’s loneliness and outsider status. Skeeter quietly rebels against the norms of her privileged world.
The Cost of Telling the Truth
The film shows the hypocrisy of the time. A Black maid could raise a white child but still had to use an outdoor toilet. That contradiction strikes hard.

At the heart of the story, Skeeter chooses to write a book that tells the maids’ stories. Doing so puts everyone involved at risk. Aibileen speaks up first. Minny follows her lead. More maids join them. Each voice adds emotion, truth, and depth to the book.
Laughter, Tears, and Triumph
This film will move you to tears. Prepare to cry in anger over injustice. Expect to laugh when toilets cover Hilly’s yard. Minny’s secret ingredient in her chocolate pie will have you laughing again. Finally, you’ll cheer as Aibileen and Minny reclaim their dignity and find strength.
Final Thoughts
Go see The Help. It does more than entertain—it inspires. It shows how far we’ve come and why we must keep moving forward.
