The statistics on the number of stepmoms in the U.S. are not accurate since many stepmoms don’t live with their stepchildren. However, the number of stepmoms is on the rise as more dads are getting joint or full custody of their children.

It’s possible for love and commitment to exist in a blended family. A stepmom who made a remarkable impact in her stepchild’s life was Sarah Bush Lincoln, stepmom to President Abraham Lincoln.
Sarah, Thomas Lincoln’s second wife, lost her first husband, Daniel Johnston in 1816. She remarried three years later merging her three kids into Thomas Lincoln’s family.
It’s easy to conclude from Sarah’s life with her first husband Daniel that she was resilient. In the face of financial hardship, she took the job of a cleaner and cook for a jailhouse and also performed cleaning services for a courthouse.
She was also able to recover financially after the death of her husband. She bought a cabin and sent her daughter to a private school.
Sarah made a noticeable transformation in her new home, cleaning up her stepchildren, Abraham, and his sister and treating them as her own. At age ten when Sarah arrived, Abraham began addressing her as “mama.”
She was a motivation to Abraham, encouraging him to read and learn by giving him access to books she brought from Kentucky. Even after the death of his father, Abraham maintained a close relationship with his stepmom.
Abraham continued to visit her taking care of her and her land until her death. By every account, Sarah was a wonderful stepmom to Abraham and his sister.
She is described as a firm kind-hearted woman who always enjoyed a good laugh. There’s a widespread belief Abraham Lincoln’s legendary sense of humor was influenced by his stepmother.
