Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June every year in the U.S and other parts of the world. Since it falls on a weekday, businesses are usually closed, and most families make out time for the father figures in their life. This day recognizes the important roles fathers play.
History
The origin of Father’s Day is linked to a service held in a West Virginia church on July 5th, 1908. The Sunday service was dedicated to fathers in honor of men who lost their lives at a mine explosion in Monongah. However, the intention was a one-time celebration.
Sonora Dodd, a woman whom her father raised, a widower, thought of the need for a special day for fathers, just like there is for mothers. In 1910, alongside her local church, Sonora campaigned for a day to hold the celebration.
Her initial suggestion was for Father’s Day to be marked on June 5th. However, the third Sunday in June became the official date. Father’s Day was first celebrated in the state of Washington on June 19th, 1910.
Unfortunately, Father’s Day wasn’t widely recognized as Mother’s Day. Sonora, with the help of manufacturers of male products, began another campaign in 1930. In 1966, president Lyndon B Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
How to Celebrate Father’s Day
Celebrating your dad as best as possible is entirely up to you. Some take their fathers out for dinner, buy them gifts, or spend quality time with them. You may also find people wearing a rose, the official flower for Father’s Day. A white rose symbolizes a deceased dad, and a red rose is worn to honor a dad who is alive.
Fathers play a significant role in a child’s life, and stepdads are not left out. They choose to raise kids that aren’t biologically theirs. So, if you have a father figure, let them know you appreciate their efforts. Enjoy some hilarious jokes with your dad.

“Do you like potato pancakes?” “No,” comes the answer, and the silence returns like a suffocating blanket. “Do you have a brother?” “No.” After giving it some thought, the boy plays his last card: “If you had a brother, would he like potato pancakes?”
2. I don’t get as excited about gifts as other people do, which drives my wife nuts. For Father’s Day, my wife was determined to get a reaction out of me, so she ordered me a custom-designed tie. 3. Three new fathers, an Englishman, a Welshman, and an Indian, are looking at their newborn babies’ cribs in the hospital.
All three babies are side by side, and the fathers congratulate each other on their new arrivals.
Just then, a nurse enters the room, looking quite flustered.
“I’m sorry,” says the nurse, ” but we’ve lost the paperwork and can’t tell you whose baby is whose!”
The three fathers look at each other and agree that the only possible solution to avoid embarrassing the hospital is to choose a baby, take it home and make sure it is loved as any child should be.
The Englishman steps forward and exclaims, “I would like to choose first.”
The other two fathers roll their eyes but agree.
The Englishman walks to the babies and, without hesitation, picks up what is the Indian man’s child.
As the Englishman leaves, he catches the eye of the Indian and says, “Sorry mate, but one of those two babies back there is Welsh, and I can’t take that risk.”
