History of International Dance Day
International Dance Day was created in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). They chose April 29 because it is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), a prominent figure in the world of dance that has been dubbed “The Shakespeare of Ballet” by many.
UNESCO has officially acknowledged International Dance Day, with the ITI legally named as the day’s originator and organizer. As a result, activities are organized and executed across all UN member nations. However, thanks to Covid-19, most events in 2021 will be held online.
