Happy Stepfather’s Day – 2021

Today marks a special day to celebrate the most influential men in our lives: our father figures. Father’s Day provides the perfect opportunity to show our dads or stepdads how much we appreciate their role in our lives. So Stepdads, especially, should be celebrated today – and all days.

DNA isn’t the only requirement to be a dad. In fact, and rather, unfortunately, many biological fathers are not cut out to be “dads.” The biggest factor to being a dad is love, and how better to show love by choosing to raise and support a child you don’t have to?

Jonathan Van Ness words it perfectly: “When someone takes you on as their own when you’re not biologically their own, I think it’s really special…[My stepdad] didn’t have to raise me. He wanted to.”

As a stepchild, I am incredibly thankful my stepfather chose to “step up” and be my dad. He’s the only dad I’ve known, and I can’t imagine what my life would have been like without him. He has taught me so much, and I will forever cherish many childhood memories with him, particularly our fishing trips.

Not only did he choose to be my dad, but he also helped to provide me with my best friend: my younger sister. I struggle to find the words for my appreciation for his role in my life, but he has definitely made it better.

If you are a stepfather, I hope you know just how cherished you are. Even if your stepchild struggles to articulate their appreciation for all of your love and support, know that they do feel it.

Although we don’t need to make a designated day on the calendar to celebrate the people who have impacted our lives, I hope you take the time today to share with your loved ones just how much they mean to you.

If you’re a stepchild like me, I especially hope you share these feelings of gratitude with your stepdad.

I applaud all stepfathers on this notable day, especially mine. Happy Stepfather’s Day! Here’s how you can make Father’s day special for your stepdad.

  1. Great article! As a suggestion for making stepfathers feel special, how about designating a separate day for them? I know there is a Step Family Day that lands on Mexican Independence Day (I mean, September 16th), but this seems a little “watered down”. Somewhere on the internet, I read the unofficial day for stepmothers to be the Sunday after Mother’s Day. Maybe, Stepfather’s Day could land on the Sunday after Father’s Day.
