Every year, the Academy of Motions Picture Art and Sciences (AMPAS) awards excellence in cinematic achievements. This vetting is done by the Academy’s voting membership.


The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, is the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry around the world. Each category winner is awarded a copy of the golden statuette as a trophy, officially called the “Academy Award of Merit.” George Stanley sculpted it after getting inspiration from Cedric Gibbons.

In 1929, the first Academy Award was presented at a private dinner hosted by Douglas Fairbanks in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  Its first radio broadcast was in 1930, while the TV broadcast was in 1953. Known as the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony, it is now televised live, worldwide.
