Child With Asthma – Six Steps You Should Be Taking To Help

If you have a child with asthma, it can be difficult to alleviate the symptoms and help your child feel more comfortable. Although there may be poor outdoor air quality or other factors you can’t control, there are a few precautions you can take at home. By taking these steps, it can help to further protect your child’s health and create a more livable environment.

Use An Air Purifier

By using an air purifier in different sections of the home, it can improve the indoor air quality by removing circulating pollutants, dust mites and toxins from the air. Keep the air purifier on in your child’s room throughout the day and in commonly used areas of the home. This is especially helpful when your child is allergic to outdoor pollens and can’t open the windows in the home.

Close the Windows

Keeping the windows closed throughout the year, especially during the Spring will reduce the amount of pollen entering the home. If necessary, only open windows late at night or in early morning when pollen levels are at their lowest. Also, don’t hang clothes outside to dry. It’s also important to wash your children’s clothes after each use, no matter how clean it may be, to prevent the spread of pollen and/or dust in the home.

Replace Carpeted Floors

Carpets can significantly increase asthma symptoms by collecting pollen and dust. This build up can be tough to remove. This drawback should motivate you to seriously consider installing hardwood floors or tile. Hardwood floors or tiles will make it easy to keep pollen and allergens from building up in the home.

Still, it’s important to clean the floors often. If removing the carpet isn’t an option, it should be vacuumed at least once a day to remove tracked in dirt. Try not to shampoo or wash the carpet, as the moisture makes it more difficult to clean and remove allergens. A simple vacuum once every day or two will make a major difference.

Pest Control

It’s important to use a pest control service every three to six months to remove asthma triggering pests and insects from your home. Re-infestation will also be prevented by using this service for an effective way of improving asthma symptoms.

The experts at North Shore Pest Detective Ltd say this is important to do even if you don’t notice any pests around your home. More than likely, they keep themselves hidden from view, but what they leave behind can greatly affect the health of your family, especially kids with asthma and allergies.

Keep Pets Outside

It’s important to consider relocating indoor pets to a new home or having them live outdoors to improve the air quality. The pets should be groomed outdoors and cleaned each month to reduce dander.

At the very least, make sure they stay off of furniture and preferably out of the child’s bedroom. If they come inside often, make sure they are bathed regularly to prevent problems.

Perform Air Duct Cleaning

An efficient way of improving the indoor air quality is by having the air ducts cleaned which can remove mold. The air ducts can also be replaced with extra steps taken to reduce the amount of moisture.

By taking the necessary steps and improvements to clean your home and remove common asthma triggers, it will make it a more comfortable environment for your child and can improve their health. The indoor air quality must be protected and kept free of allergens or pollen each month to improve asthma symptoms and reduce the risk of an attack.
