Five Things To Avoid On A First Date
So you have a date coming up – not just any date, a first date. First dates are incredibly important, because how they go will determine whether or not there will be a second date, a third date, and so on. So, what do you do to prepare? Well here’s a guide about what exactly NOT to do.
1. Bringing Up Ex’s
Despite this being an age old rule nearly everyone knows, you would be shocked by the number of people who fall into this trap. While it may be tempting to bring up a funny story or exciting anecdote that involves an ex, do NOT do it. It will instantly make your date uncomfortable and make you look like you’re not over your ex. The first date is about you and your date getting to know each other, so focus on the present rather than the past.
2. Ordering Messy Food
Save yourself possible embarrassment by picking your food strategically. Avoid foods that will leave debris in your teeth or spill easily.
Pastas with marinara sauce, soups, or anything overly greasy are a bad choice if you’re looking to avoid embarrassing stains or spills. Remember to go easy on the onions and garlic as well, unless you want to reek of your dinner the rest of the night.
3. Dressing Like Someone You’re Not
While of course it’s advisable to put your best foot forward, many people make the mistake of going all out on the first date and coming off as someone you’re not. So don’t go on some shopping spree and end up looking like an overly exaggerated version of yourself.
Remember that the expectation you set at the first date is the expectation you’ll have to hold yourself up to for all subsequent dates. So yes, do your make up and wear a nice outfit, but remember to keep it reasonable and ask yourself if you look like you.
4. Drinking Too Much
This tip should be obvious, but once again, a surprising number of people will end up drunkenly embarrassing themselves on a first date because of a few too many beers or cocktails. While it may seem like a good idea to have a drink or two before the date to calm your nerves, make sure it doesn’t get out of hand, or you could majorly regret it. If you are worried that the temptation to drink may be too strong, then choose a location for your date that doesn’t serve alcohol.
5. Bringing Up Serious Issues or Problems
Similar to bringing up ex’s, bringing up very serious topics like marriage, children, or financial troubles are very much taboo, and can majorly turn off your date. Once again, the first date is meant for you and your date to simply get to know each other. So check your emotional baggage at the door, and enjoy a night minus the issues.
Well there you have it. Avoid these five things and hopefully your first date will go without a hitch. Good luck and happy dating!
