Tips For Helping Your Children Love Reading

Reading has always been such a huge part of society. Nowadays, thanks to the introduction of smartphones, tablets, computers and games consoles, books seem to have fallen by the wayside.

While the many benefits of reading remain unchanged, competing with these forms of entertainment are hard. Many of you may be thinking of how you can introduce reading into something your children will love.

Without further ado, let’s find out some of the ways you can do this.

Read Books with Illustrations

Perhaps one of the most important aspects to remember is that children love visual media, which is why digital entertainment is so appealing. By reading books with illustrations, your child will become more engaged with the story and find it much more entertaining.

Also, all of us remember those beautiful and expensive books which play music and have 3d objects from paper in it and how many times we got our hand on these books.

When you’re reading your books, encourage your children to ask questions about the pictures and story. This way, they can become more focused on what they’re reading and you can make sure they understand it.

Make Reading Time Pleasurable

When you’re reading with your child, there’s no reason why you can’t get cuddled up to make it the most comfortable experience possible. If your child is nice and cozy with you, they’re going to want to read more often.

They’ll begin to relate it to having some quality time with you or your partner.

Making the Story Real

“The core reason why stories are so entertaining is that they take elements of real life and present them in a creative and fun way. While you’re reading with your child, take a pause to connect the dots so your child can see the similarities the story has with real life.” says Harriet Prince, a children’s book writer.

You could even change the character names, say for a group of friends, into your child’s friends to make this connection easier.

Using Online Tools

While the internet might be one of the biggest distractions that a child has to stop them from reading, there are also many online tools that are available that can help. To get started, here are a few you can try:

  • Poetry Idea Engine – A free online service that can help your child learn to write their own poetry, thus stimulating a passion for reading and writing.
  • Academized & Assignment Help – These are two resources where you can find writers who can write short stories for your child based on what they love to read.
  • Boomessays & Essayroo – These are platforms where you can share children’s stories with others and find new ones your child will love. Read Boomessays review to find out more about the platform.
  • Books Should Be Free – A platform where you can find thousands of free audio books to discover and listen to with your children.

Talk About Obvious Points

As an adult, many of the concepts you’ll explore in your stories may seem obvious, but these may not be so clear to your child. Make sure as you’re reading, you talk about the elements making up the story.

Elements such as friendship, love or compassion, to make sure your child understands what they’re reading.

Make it Fun!

The most important thing you need to remember is that reading needs to be fun for your child.

Otherwise, they simply won’t enjoy it. Try using funny faces, character voices or even singing the story to make it more entertaining.

Remember, if your child isn’t in the mood for reading one night, that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you should force them too.

Otherwise, they’ll quickly learn to hate it.
