Online Dating: Is It Right for You?
Online Dating & The Couch
There’s no doubt that finding someone online you click with is tough. However, it gets even tougher if you have a few deal breakers that lead to an immediate break-up if not addressed in the beginning. Let’s take, such as, “The Couch.” This was a famous episode of Seinfeld where Elaine finally believes she is in love.
Jerry buys a new couch and needs his old one moved out. When the mover enters the apartment, Elaine, who is also there, immediately falls for him. They get along well, and everything is fine until Jerry asks her if she has approached the subject of a woman’s right to choose. This is where things turn south. He says the wrong answer, and the magic is immediately gone.
This is more common than you think. Given how tough it is just to approach someone and ask them for a date, deal breakers make the odds of finding someone you love and who agrees with things you passionately care about even tougher. While online dating sites have helped the introverts and busy people find like-minded people that they can share a life with, they often don’t go far enough to help people avoid deal breakers.
If you’re looking into online dating as a practical way to meet new people, you might want to look into specialized online dating sites that address your concerns. Here are a few of the deal breakers that could be avoided:
Pets
Let’s say you’re a dog lover, and you’re looking for a fellow dog lover to spend your days with. Most online dating sites will ask you whether you’re a pet lover, but this might not be enough as you’re looking for a person who is as passionate about dogs as you are. In addition, the person might be a pet lover, but they’re a cat person and not a dog person.
Many people who own cats don’t necessarily share that same affection for dogs. Because of these reasons, you might want to look at a dating site for dog lovers. This will enable you to find a like-minded person who will care for your dog as much as you do.
Food
This does not necessarily mean that if you love Italian food and the other person doesn’t that you should cut things off with the person. This is more about the ethical issues that concern the food we eat. If you’re a vegan dating someone who eats meat could be tough.
There are not only the logistical and monetary problems with purchasing and preparing two different meals; there’s also the arguments that could arise literally at the dinner table about the dinner. This is a lot to ask for in a relationship. A vegan dating site could serve in your best interest if you’re of that persuasion.
Religion
As a couple, you should never argue about religion, right? If you were raised a certain way and you have very strong opinions on religion, it would certainly make sense to find someone who shares your religious beliefs, at least to an extent.
There are online dating sites that cater to pretty much every religion and belief system, so you might want to take a look if this is an important reason for you.
Online dating can be a great way to get out there and meet new people. If you choose the right website based on your interests and stay conscious of them throughout the process, you might just meet the one!
