National Smile Day ~ Friday Humor

On May 31, we celebrate National Smile Day and encourage everyone to bring their finest smile to this gathering. Illinois dentists, Dr. Tim Stirneman and Jim Wojdyla of Compassionate Dental Care created this day.

The aim is to show the world the power of a good smile. The best thing is that this day also marks the start of National Smile Month!

History of National Smile Day

According to primatologist Signe Preuschoft, the history of the smile can be traced back to monkeys and apes. To assert dominance or ward off predators, these animals bare their teeth in the shape of a smile.

According to one idea, humans imitated this behavior, and the smile evolved to express amusement and pleasure over time. Smiles, according to research, were a strategy for early men to attract mates on their journey to displaying happiness.

If you’ve ever wondered why older photographs often portray people without smiles, it’s because sweets and a bad diet caused a lot of tooth decay. Furthermore, the aristocratic belief that smiling and laughing was impolite and demonstrated a lack of self-control or good manners was more widespread.

Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” was one of the few exceptions, despite the portrait’s ambiguity being part of its reputation. People began smiling even in portraits, this time with their teeth on display, as dentistry and an attitude of authenticity grew.

Studies of yearbook photos across time show that the variety of grins has grown over time. According to the study, participants’ smiles eventually faded as they had to hold the stance for extended periods in the early days of photography. In recent years, the prevalence of smiling has been related to culture and traditions, and it differs by country.

How to Celebrate National Smile Day

Smile

Of course, the greatest way to commemorate this day dedicated to smiling is to smile! Spread some joy and let your smile brighten someone else’s day.

We don’t realize we’re frowning for most of the day. Just for a moment, share a smile with someone and notice its impact on your daily interactions.

Make Another Person Happy

Make one small gesture to put a smile on someone else’s face. Begin small or go big on making someone happy. Whatever path you take, remember to savor the sensation of being able to brighten someone’s day with your sweet smile.

Go to the Dentist

Dentists invented this day, so treat yours by visiting them. Make an appointment for a dental examination to ensure that your smile is in place.
