National Candy Day ~ Friday Humor

The sweet holiday, National Candy Day, is celebrated on the 4th of November every year. This celebration is right after Halloween and is filled with sweet and sour candies that are chewy, hard, or fruit flavored.

History of National Candy Day

India is where the history of candy begins. The Persians and Greeks discovered that the inhabitants of India had what they dubbed “reeds that make honey without bees” during the sixth and fourth centuries BC.

In reality, what appeared to be reeds was Southeast Asian sugarcane. Boiling sugarcane juice produced “khanda,” or small bits of sugar, which the ancient Indians termed.

Honey was used to cover fruits and flowers in ancient China, the Middle East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome to preserve them and transform them into candy before sugarcane was domesticated outside Asia.

Before the Industrial Revolution, candy was used to soothe the stomach or chill the throat. In the 18th century, France and Britain brought the first candies to the United States. Because so few colonists were proficient in sugar work, these novel confections were exclusively available to the wealthy.

Technology advancements during the Industrial Revolution’s heyday in the 1830s made sweets available to more people than just the wealthy, creating a new market, particularly for kids.

While some artisan sugar craftsmen survived, candy shops were increasingly becoming a part of everyday life in the United States, particularly for young people.

Penny candy soon became the first thing kids would buy with their money, and candy shop proprietors relied heavily on the patronage of kids and families to stay in business.
