Veteran’s Day – Honoring Our Heroes

Veteran’s Day is a time to thank everyone who served or is still serving for their sacrifice and bravery.

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself ~ Joseph Campbell.

History of the Veteran’s Day

Known as the Great War, World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month, ending the sounds of battle in Europe. About 116,000 men from the five million called to service lost their lives. Armistice Day is observed on November 11th, with two minutes of silence in remembrance of those who died during the war.

In the United States, the holiday’s name was officially changed from Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day to acknowledge the sacrifices of World War II and the Korean War soldiers.

Celebrating Veterans Around the World

In the British Common Wealth Countries and Europe, two minutes of silence is observed at 11 am every November 11th. France, Canada, and Australia also celebrate the veterans of World Wars I and II on November 11th. Britain has Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of every November.

In the US, an official ceremony occurs every Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. Also, various localities throughout the US observe this Day with parades.

Many US homes proudly fly the American flag. Church services are held to honor and pray for the fallen and give thanks.

Banks and government offices are closed to be a part of Veteran’s Day. Many businesses, such as restaurants and stores, use this opportunity to offer sales events, discounts, and giveaways for veterans.

How Can We Give Back

Unfortunately, many of us are unsure about how to give back. How do you reach out to troops abroad or honor veterans who have returned home. Giving back or showing gratitude to Veterans shouldn’t be a tough choice on this important day of honoring the members of our military past and present.

Saying thank you never goes out of style. For soldiers currently serving abroad, the simplest way to show your support for military personnel serving abroad is to write a letter of gratitude.

You’ll be satisfied with the positive impact of your heartfelt thank you message to a soldier you may never meet. In your day to day life, when you meet a soldier, especially on Veterans Day, take a moment to say “Hi” or “Thank you for your service.”

Participate

There’re several ways you can participate and be involved in honoring our heroes. Show up for a Veteran’s Day event in your area. It could be a parade or service for veterans, and Veterans Day is the perfect day to do just that.

You can also participate by donating. Some organizations offer support, services, and appreciation to men of the military. Veteran’s Day presents an opportunity to fly the flag. You should follow the proper rules for display while at it.

Visit a Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital

It’s easy to find a VA hospital in your locality hosting events on Veteran’s Day. You can get involved by helping them with the food or decorations. Finding out what the policies are regarding interacting with patients is a step in the right direction.

Spend Time with a Veteran

Inviting a veteran to a National Park is a great way to spend this day since admission is now free for all veterans.  Beginning Veterans Day and every day thereafter admissions for veterans is free.

Spending time outdoors helps improve physical and mental health. So, it will do you both some good. You can ask the Veteran about their service without being intrusive.

Some of the questions you can ask include:

  • How long did you serve?
  • What did you do for the military?
  • What was your favorite part about serving?

You don’t have to say much, just give your full attention and listen. Sometimes, talking can be therapeutic and relieving.

Other businesses, shops, and restaurants also offer some freebies for Veteran’s Day. Find one close to you and give a treat to a Veteran. Check out these Veterans Day quotes and include one in your thank you message to a Veteran.
