How To Replace Brake Discs On Your Car

If there is one part of your car you want to count on each time you get behind the wheel, it’s your brakes. Thus, when it’s time to replace your brake discs, you may automatically assume this will mean a trip to your local mechanic.

However, to the surprise of yourself and many other drivers, changing brake discs on a car is easy and requires no special tools to do so. Here are some tips on how to replace brake discs on your car.

1. Gather your Tools

Though you won’t need specialized tools, you should still gather a few items. These include a lug wrench, jack, a C-clamp to be used when retracting the piston, a socket or adjustable wrench, and a turkey baster or similar item, which you will be using to draw out the brake fluid.

2. Remove the Wheel and Slider Bolts

To remove the wheel, use your lug wrench, which should only take a few minutes. As for the slider bolt, you’ll need your adjustable or socket wrench. Usually, on the inside of your wheel, the slider bolts are somewhat long but should slide out very easily once you get them loosened.

3. Slide Out the Old Brake Pads

Once you have your auto front disc brake conversion kit by your side, you are ready to slide out the old brake pads on your car. Held on by retaining clips, the clips are easy to remove, allowing you to remove the worn-out brake pads.

When you compare the worn-out brake pad to the new one you are preparing to install, you’ll notice quite a bit of difference in their thickness.

4. Install the New Brake Pad

After applying a small amount of grease to your wheel, you can slide on the new brake pad. It should go on as easily as the old one came off when you do. Install the new retaining clips after you get the brake pad in place. These will usually be tighter than the older ones you removed, so don’t let this be a concern.

5. Monitor your Brake Fluid Level

Once you have the brake pads in place, your car’s brake fluid level will begin to rise slowly. As it does, you may need the turkey baster to remove a small amount of fluid from your fluid reservoir. However, only do so if it appears that the reservoir will overflow.

Now you know how to replace brake discs on your car, you can use the mechanic fees on something much more fun. Here are some other things to check in your car to guarantee a safe driving experience.
