A marriage is an incredibly precious and sacred relationship that should be cherished always. Any married couple will tell you marriage comes with its challenges. Overcoming these challenges will make you a stronger couple in the end.
The road won’t be easy and sometimes some words of encouragement are all you need to overcome an obstacle. Here are ten scriptures that can provide comfort, encouragement and reinforcement to help your marriage.
Scripture #1 – Ephesians 4:2-3
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. – Ephesians 4:2-3
Ephesians 4:2-3 sets a great precedent for marriages. Remaining humble throughout your marriage ensures you and your spouse’s egos do not overshadow one another. Any success you have is not one person’s accomplishment and should be viewed as a shared success.
Patience is extremely important in a marriage. Jumping to conclusions, over-reacting, and being quick to anger can harm a relationship. Showing patience with your spouse shows your compassion.
Scripture #2 – Hebrews 13:4
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. – Hebrews 13:4
This message may seem harsh, as it states God will judge the adulterous, but its foundation is a strong message. Holding marriage in honor among all is a sign of respect. It shows your marriage is the most important thing in your life and that temptations have no place in your marriage.

Scripture #3 – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Chances are you’ve heard this phrase before. It is a widely used verse during wedding ceremonies and for good reason. It is the perfect description of how your love should be for your spouse and vice versa.
Important marital themes such as patience, forgiveness, communication and trust all ingrained in this one verse.
Scripture #4 – 1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13
A simple yet encouraging message for all married couples. It expresses the importance of faith and hope; both integral aspects of a marriage and life. However, it states that love is the most important. All you need is love.
Scripture #5 – 1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. – 1 Peter 4:8
Mistakes will be made and sins will happen. Loving one another deeply can help atone for these sins. Forgiveness is a deep-rooted virtue within love. Forgiving each other for sins and mistakes can help lead to a successful and happy marriage.
Scripture #6 – Proverbs 10:12
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs. – Proverbs 10:12
Being understanding and loving one another, even through times of disagreement, will help you to overcome all differences.
Scripture #7 – Proverbs 31:10
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. – Proverbs 31:10
While this is directed towards men, it is applicable to both genders. A loving spouse is worth far more than all the wealth in the world. Marrying for money or wealth, while seemingly appealing, doesn’t have the same worth as a marriage based on love.
Scripture #8 – Colossians 3:18-19
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. – Colossians 3:18-19
The overall structure of the verse is dated and the two genders can be interchangeable. However, the basic premise of the verse will always be true. Never be harsh on your spouse by taking your anger out on them. Always be kind and caring.
Submitting to your spouse may sound like a strange idea in today’s world. However, it doesn’t quite have the literal meaning it seems. Submitting to your spouse means that you are willing to go out of your way for them. This type of submission is reciprocal and is not applicable to only one gender.
Scripture #9 – Proverbs 14:29
A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. – Proverbs 14:29
Again, this verse is directed towards men but applies to women also. As they say, patience is a virtue. Learning to be patient with your spouse and in your relationship is extremely important. Being quick to judge and anger will only increase and intensify the arguments in a marriage.
Scripture #10 – Malachi 2:16
Guard yourself in spirit, and don’t break faith. – Malachi 2:16
This final verse can have two meanings. Don’t break your faith in God and don’t break faith in your marriage.
No matter how difficult the times may be or how low of a valley your relationship has hit, always have faith in it. Have faith in the love for your spouse and faith in the strength of your relationship.
