DaughtersHow to Be a Good Stepdad

Three Great Daddy-Daughter Dates

The relationship between a father and daughter is critical.  In fact, studies show a good rapport between a father and daughter can help a woman capably handle stress better when she becomes an adult.

Yes, it might sound unbelievable, but those father-daughter dates are essential. Here are three ideas for great daddy-daughter dates.

Shared Interests Date

One type of date that both dads and daughters can enjoy together revolves around similar interests. People who are interested in fantasy might find it enjoyable to visit a local sci-fi convention or a fantasy-based event like Renaissance Faire or theme park.

Of course, these are just a few examples, you and your daughter might be interested in something else like a sporting event.

The point is to find something you’re both passionate about. Be sure to visit a place where you might find other like-minded individuals to mingle with.

Exploratory Expedition

Before the advent of smart devices, there was a time when kids learned about the world by exploring it. To be sure, smart devices are useful and have their place.

However, there’s still precious value in investigating the outside world that should pay attention. One way to explore the world around you is by visiting nature oriented places.

One good example is a place like an aquarium, where you and your daughter can see and experience the wonders of the sea.

Aquariums are great because you can visit any time of year and have a memorable experience. Of course, an aquarium is just one example; there are zoos and natural reserves to check out.

The animal world has a lot to offer, but vegetation might be interesting to admire also. You could visit a local farm where you and your daughter can learn about farming.

The farmer might let you pick your fruits or vegetables. You should also try to cook some of these pickings when you get home to make the entire day a little more enriching.

The idea here is to find something to do that you believe your daughter hasn’t experienced before.

It might be a good idea to brush up on the eco-system, nature, vegetation, or whatever you are going to explore so you’re prepared for any questions your daughter may have.

Daughter-Planned Outing

Another interesting idea that will make your daughter feel great and boost her self-esteem is having her plan the day on her own. Give her some boundaries to make sure she doesn’t try to plan a day beyond your budget or time but give her a free hand.

This will give you a glimpse into the kinds of things your daughter wants to explore and what she believes you might enjoy. It also gives your daughter the opportunity to be responsible for the entire itinerary.

Let her know she needs to plan for a meal, or you both might end up starving during your outing. You do need to be open to the ideas your daughter might come up with to make sure she really does get to decide how the date goes.

It should make your daughter feel responsible, accomplished, and appreciated in more ways than one. This particular type of date should be fun and make you a great father, since you are teaching her a few life lessons, too.

Of course, these are just a few suggestions for dates. You and your daughter could come up with a few others. Hopefully, these ideas steer you in the right direction.

Before you make plans to take your daughter out an outing you had better be dating your wife on a regular basis. Remember your wife is your first priority. During these dates with your wife, you should be modeling the same behaviors you intend on displaying for your daughter – holding the door open for her, pulling out her chair at the table and engaging her in meaningful conversation.  Conversation with your daughter should be focused on her and communicate:

  • Your approval and admiration
  • Respect for her feelings and her voice
  • Your genuine interest in who she is as a person; her likes, dislikes, fears, ambitions, etc.

As a dad, you are responsible for setting your daughter’s expectations for how the rest of the men in her life will treat her. Be intentional and set the highest expectations.
