National Dog Day ~ Friday Humor

National Dog Day is a celebration observed on August 26th each year in the United States and some other countries. This day is dedicated to honoring and appreciating dogs of all breeds and sizes and raising awareness about the importance of dog adoption and animal welfare.

History of National Dog Day

National Dog Day was founded by Colleen Paige, an animal advocate and pet lifestyle expert, in 2004. Colleen Paige has a strong passion for animals and wanted to create a day that celebrated dogs and raised awareness about their needs, including adoption from shelters and rescue organizations. She chose August 26th as the date for National Dog Day to commemorate when her family adopted her first dog as a child.

The history of National Dog Day is rooted in Colleen Paige’s commitment to promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. She has also founded other animal-related observances, such as National Puppy Day, National Cat Day, and National Pet Day. These observances highlight the importance of animals in our lives and encourage compassion and care for them.

National Dog Day reminds us of dogs’ numerous roles in our lives – as companions, service animals, therapy animals, and more. It’s a day to recognize the unconditional love and loyalty that dogs bring to our families and communities.

Over the years, National Dog Day has gained popularity.  Many people and organizations have participated by sharing their love for dogs through social media, hosting adoption events, organizing fundraisers for animal welfare causes, and showcasing the positive impact dogs have on society.

The day has also been recognized by various official bodies and even some celebrities, helping to spread its message far and wide. Ultimately, National Dog Day serves as an annual occasion for celebrating dogs, advocating for their well-being, and inspiring actions that contribute to a better life for all dogs.

How to Celebrate National Dog Day

Celebrating National Dog Day can be a wonderful way to show appreciation for your furry friend and contribute to the well-being of dogs everywhere. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate:

Spend Quality Time: Dedicate the day to spending quality time with your dog. Take them for an extra-long walk, play their favorite games, or snuggle up together.

Visit a Dog Park: If your dog enjoys socializing with other dogs, take them to a dog park. Here, they can run, play, and interact with other canine friends.

Organize a Playdate: Invite friends or family members with dogs for a playdate. This can be a fun way for dogs to socialize and have a great time together.

Spoil with Treats: Treat your dog to special treats or bake homemade dog-friendly treats. Ensure the treats are safe and suitable for your dog’s dietary needs.

Donate to Animal Shelters: Consider donating to your local animal shelter or rescue organization. They often rely on donations to provide care for dogs in need.

Adopt a Dog: If you’re ready for the commitment, consider adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue organization. Giving a dog a forever home is one of the best ways to celebrate the day.

Volunteer: Spend some time volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue. You can help with tasks like walking dogs, cleaning, or assisting with adoption events.

Create Art or Crafts: Get creative and make dog-related art or crafts. You could paint a portrait of your dog, create a scrapbook, or even design a personalized dog tag.

Educational Activities: Use the day to educate yourself and others about responsible dog ownership, training tips, and canine health.

Host a Pet-Friendly Event: If you have a community of dog-loving friends, consider hosting a pet-friendly gathering. It could be a picnic, barbecue, or any other event where dogs are welcome.

Share on Social Media: Share photos and stories of your dog on social media using the hashtag #NationalDogDay to join the celebration online.

Health Checkup: Schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a health checkup or any necessary vaccinations. Ensuring your dog’s well-being is a great way to celebrate.

Create a Comfortable Space: If your dog loves to relax, consider creating a cozy space with blankets, pillows, and toys where they can unwind.

Remember that every dog is unique, so choose activities that align with your dog’s preferences and needs. Whether you have a canine companion or not, National Dog Day reminds us of the importance of dogs in our lives and their positive impact on us.

Enjoy some jokes about dogs.

1. A guy sits in a movie theater and notices that the man in front of him has brought his dog and is sitting in the seat next to him. He thinks it’s unusual but likes dogs, so he decides that he won’t mention it as long as it’s not a distraction.

The movie starts, and pretty soon, there’s a funny part. The dog makes some low-woofing sounds that seem like laughter. There’s a sad part in a while, and the dog appears to be weeping. This continues throughout the film, and the man sitting behind the dog is shocked.

When the lights come up, he taps the dog’s owner on the shoulder and tells him, “I gotta say, and I know it sounds weird, but it seemed like your dog enjoyed this movie.”

The dog owner looks at the dog and nods. “I know, it really is weird,” he says, “because he absolutely hated the book.”

2. As a butcher is shooing away a dog from his shop, he sees a $25 bill and a note in his mouth, reading: “10 pork chops, please.” Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of pork chops in the dog’s mouth, and quickly closes the shop.

He follows the dog, watches him wait for a green light, looks both ways and trots across the road to a bus stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench.

When a bus arrives, he walks to the front, looks at the number, and then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck. The dog takes in the scenery as the bus travels into the suburbs.

After a while, he stands on his back paws to push the “stop” bell, then the butcher follows him off. The dog runs to a house and drops his bag on the step. He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself -WHAP!- against the door.

He does this again and again. No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and starts cursing and shouting at the dog.

The butcher runs up and screams at the guy: “What in hell are you doing? This dog’s a genius!” The owner responds, “Genius, my ass… It’s the second time this week he’s forgotten his keys!”

3. A lost dog wanders through the jungle. In the distance, a lion sees him and whispers: “I’m going to eat him. I have never seen anything like that before.”

The lion then began to approach the dog in a threatening manner. When the dog realized this, he panicked, but as he tried to run away, he saw a bone nearby and got the idea to speak out loud. “Lion meat is delicious!”

The lion suddenly stopped and said: “Wow, this guy is stronger than he looks, I better go while I can. “A monkey was watching this from the tree. Apparently, the monkey thought that if he told the lion, he would get something in return.

Then the monkey told the lion the truth, and the lion got angry and said: “Go on my back, and I’ll take you with me.”

And he began to run after the dog. When the dog saw this, he realized what had happened and began to panic even more. Then he had another idea and yelled: “Where the hell is that monkey! I told him to bring another lion an hour ago!”

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” – Samuel Butler
