How To Find The Right Singer For Your Event

No matter what event you’re hosting, a singer can turn it around to make it the most talked-about event of the year. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as saying you need a performer and suddenly finding the perfect fit.

If you’re on the path to finding an awesome singer, here’s how to find the right singer for your event.

Consider the Theme of the Event

What type of event are you hosting? Is this a birthday party? A wedding? Different occasions need different types of musical talent. Although you can find singers for hire quickly, you should seek out performers who understand the needs of your event and are willing to deliver them.

If this is a cultural event, look for someone who understands your culture or is part of it to fit in perfectly instead of standing out. Although some performers may surprise you, it’s better if you find someone who’s perfectly bespoke to your gathering.

Ask for Word of Mouth Recommendations

Ask friends and family if they know any skilled singers who are open to being hired for gigs. Be careful about hiring anyone before listening to them, especially if the recommendation is from a relative. Some relatives will inflate their family member’s skills out of personal bias.

Look at Auditions and Samples

Gather a good selection of auditions and samples, and listen to them. This is best done if you have a notebook or chart to keep track of what you think of each performer. Don’t try to be nice about it; these people aren’t going to read your notes. Instead, be honest whether or not you think someone is a good fit.

If you narrow it down to three or four performers, consider asking outside opinions from someone else who’s attending the event.

Consider if You Need a Band or Solo Performer

Something to consider is whether you need a solitary performer or an entire band.  Although a solo singer can be elegant and exciting, a band can often have a better stage presence since there are many people for the crowd to spread their attention between. You could hire both to play one after another, but it’s essential to think about what your event calls for.

For example, a wedding singer can be elegant and interesting. At the same time, a band can bring the party and get people ready to dance and sing along. There’s no perfect answer for all events, so make this decision carefully.

Decide how Long They’re Needed for

Although it would be awesome if you could find a performer who’s excited to sing for an entire eight-hour event: people like this don’t exist. Consider how long you need someone to perform for, and plan around that.

If your event is very long, it may be a good idea to hire more than one performer to ensure no dead air and entertainment is always on stage. Your performers may need breaks, honor this and ensure you have music that can play while they’re away from the microphone.
