Four Home Maintenance Tasks Before The Snow

If you are a stepdad, you probably want to provide your family with a secure and comfortable place to live. And when the cold starts creeping in, there are additional tasks you’ll need to take on.

Here are four often overlooked home maintenance tasks around the home you’ll need to hurry up and do before the snow hits.

Windows

You do not want cold air and moisture coming through your windows during the winter months. Moving a candle in front of the window can help you find any leaks so you can get them fixed. In addition to letting cold air in, these holes can let in moisture, which can eventually lead to mold.

Pests can also use these openings to enter your home. If you have single-pane windows, Ecoline Windows says it may be time to upgrade them to a more energy-efficient option.

Decks

When snow hits decks and balconies, they can turn into deadly accidents. Deck Remodelers says the weight and weather changes coupled with the water make them potentially major problems.

Depending on the material your deck is made from, your procedures may be a little different. If you have a wooden deck, look for any loose or broken boards and get them fixed before winter.

Take the time to inspect your stain or paint. If it is coming off, scrape it and put down a new coat before winter moisture stands on the surface. This will prevent rotting. Inspect and repair your posts and railings so everyone stays safe during the cold months.

Gutters

You must clean the gutters one last time before it starts snowing. You do not want the gutters blocked. Moisture can build up and seep under your roof, and when it does, your roof’s decking can rot.

Additionally, you may want to consider installing a gutter guard. MasterShield Gutter Protection says these guards can help stop ice build-ups from occurring in the first place.

Finally, inspect the area where the roof and gutter meet to make sure damage has not already occurred. If you find damage, get it fixed to prevent heat loss during the winter.

Plumbing Vent Pipes

You should have at least one vent pipe coming up through your roof. These fixtures are vital to removing gas and odors from the home, but they can allow water to leak in if the collar is rusted or cracked.

Start by making sure the flashing around the pipe is in good shape and securely attached to the roof. Then, move your attention to the top of the pipe. If it is open to the elements, it should be covered with a fine wire mesh.

The wire mesh should have small enough holes that pests cannot get through it as they start looking for a warm place to live. Winter is coming, and you’ll want to be ready when it arrives.

Finally, remember to take care of these chores first. Keep in mind it’s much easier to take care of these home maintenance tasks before the snow hits. If you wait too long, you might have even bigger issues.

As a step-dad, you have many responsibilities to consider when the snow sets in. Don’t forget the pest control!
