After I got married, my husband got me hooked on white noise. Using a fan drowned out our neighbors’ noises and other loud sounds that come with living in the middle of Silicon Valley, where no one seems to sleep.
If you’re a new parent of a baby, white noise is almost essential for a good night’s sleep. I’ve heard babies tend to like the sound of white noise.
Probably because it reminds them of being in a womb-like environment. Unfortunately, using a fan has its drawbacks.
It changes the temperature inside your bedroom. Also, if you have small, curious toddlers, they might want to stick their fingers inside the fan.
So, up until recently, we used an air purifier, which contains an enclosed fan and doesn’t change the temperature of the room. Unfortunately, air purifiers are rather expensive and bulky, not to mention wasteful of energy since we only wanted to use it for the white noise sound, not to purify the air.

Negatives
While the noise is adjustable, the loudest setting is extremely loud! I found it somewhat abrasive.
It’s hard for me to imagine someone being able to go to sleep in that setting. I’m grateful the volume is adjustable.
Also, while I don’t personally like electronic noises, adding some electronic nature sounds (like a babbling brook or chirping birds) might give variety for those who like them.
