Most of us are so busy in our daily lives; we don’t realize the importance of taking care of our health, and therefore we are always at risk of developing serious ailments.

Diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s usually (but not always!) occur in later life. These conditions often seem unimaginable at a young age, but they do affect a large number of young people in the US.

There are many ways to keep your body and mind healthy for longer. It’s important to understand Dementia isn’t a disease but a syndrome.

In the beginning, a person with dementia shows symptoms like short-term memory loss, confusion and anxiety.

As time goes by, these problems increase and the affected person may experience:

  • Major personality changes,
  • Becoming loud or quiet,
  • Social withdrawal,
  • Depression,
  • Inability to feed, dress and clean them,
  • Unable to make conversation,
  • Difficulty remembering names, directions, or recognizing loved ones.  

Dementia has no cure. It can be managed with medication once the disorder is diagnosed, but a cure is yet to be found.

Here are some precautions or steps that can help slow down the progression of dementia in aging men:

Dementia is known to be irreversible in most cases, but regular physical exercise can delay its onset or even slow its progression. Living a healthy lifestyle utilizing mental and physical activities will help older men avoid many diseases including dementia.

Exercises like walking, swimming, cardio, and a light jog on a daily basis are highly recommended.

Studies suggest men between the ages of 50 – 65 years who spend time doing different muscular workouts stay mentally sharp for much longer than those who don’t engage in any physical exercise at all.

Hence, it’s essential to work out/exercise to slow down or steer clear of dementia and several other diseases.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

We usually don’t pay close attention to our eating habits, and consequently, end up paying the price for it. Science proves our diet plays a significant role in keeping our mental and physical health up to par.

Adjusting our eating habits would enable us to be more active and agile. Several studies show sugary foods can have a harmful impact on mental health.

On the other hand, seafood, fruits and vegetables, green and herbal teas and lean proteins have a remarkably positive impact on your brain and memory.

For example, the Mediterranean diet which is high in fish, fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals and olive oil, is good for health.

Social Activities

It’s paramount to have friends and social activities in your life, as it contributes significantly to health and happiness. Travelling, meeting new people, making new friends, and attending social events act as happiness and brain boosters.

Maintaining face-to-face interactions with your loved ones is important. Senior men should take the time out to visit old friends, join a club, or visit the park daily, as it will benefit them on many levels.

Staying socially engaged may even protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in later life, so developing and maintaining a strong network of friends should be a priority.

Brain Activities

Another tip for slowing the progression of dementia is to challenge your brain with new ideas – in other words engaging in mental simulations.

Try things like strategic or riddle-based games, practice musical instruments or learn a new language.

Brain training games can keep the brain healthy for longer and delay the onset of dementia.

Many medicines would assist you in managing the symptoms of dementia. However, herbal treatments can help sharpen your brain and prevent further loss of memory.
