“They [in reference to prisoners that comforted others and gave away their only piece of bread] may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
The above quote is from Viktor Frankl’s 1946 book from Man’s Search for Meaning . This book chronicles his experiences as a Nazi concentration camp inmate and describes his psychotherapeutic method of finding a reason to live. According to Frankl the book intends to answer the question “How was everyday life in a concentration camp reflected in the mind of the average prisoner?”
Are you aware of the importance of a positive attitude in your life? A positive attitude is essential in addressing the challenges of leading a blended family as a husband and stepdad.
Your happiness is one of the most important aspects of your life. Why do I say this? If you really examine everything you do, everything you want to have, I would bet it’s because you believe doing and having those things will make you happy. Am I right?
If you want a new car or a million dollars why do you want those things? Ultimately, it’s because you believe these things will make you happy. Being happy is really the main goal of pretty much every living person on earth.
Once you understand happiness is your true goal, you also start to understand that new things, more money and new achievements aren’t really what you are after. Sure, they might be nice side benefits but if you were happy now would any of that stuff really matter to you much?
When you expect positive outcomes and results you usually get them. Problems are no longer problems but become opportunities to learn and grow.
This is where the importance of a positive attitude comes in. When you start developing a positive attitude in your life you begin to look at what is already good in your life and start to have more gratitude for what you already have. Instead of focusing on what is lacking and what is wrong in your life, you refocus on what you’ve already been blessed with.
Living life with a sense of gratitude instead of feelings of lack and frustration will cause you to feel happy. When you already feel happy all of those other things you thought you wanted or needed suddenly only become stuff that would be nice to have. And when that happens your happiness is no longer dependent on other people, places, things or achieving goals.
