Stepfather Secrets Revealed

The Pretty Lady and I checked out of the Los Angeles hotel where we were staying and decided to go to Pink’s hot dog stand, aka Hot Dogs to the Stars.

Pink’s Hot Dogs

While en route, we spotted a store named Johnny CupCakes.  We’re both calorie-conscious middle-aged adults. However, the hook was set when we saw the words, “0 Carbs, 0 Sugars, and 0 Fat”.

Having indulged in 0 carbs, 0 sugars, and 0 fat fare before and been sorely disappointed, I assumed that the volume of traffic in and out of the place and being on the main street translated to it had to “be good.”

The Pretty Lady and I decided we’d hit that place after lunch.  When we got to Pinks, we were shocked to see what looked like at least a one-hour plus wait, especially since I’m not Denzel Washington, and I only look like Denzel. 🙂

In deference to our hunger and not one to follow convention, we decided to have our dessert first and headed back to Johnny Cupcakes. We pulled in front of the store and saw the large mixer and bags of flour in the storefront window – I just knew this place was the real deal, and I’d be indulging in some decadent treat in a few minutes.  Imagine my shock when I saw this.

I walked all the way to the end of the store, hoping I find something rich and sweet but only to see the decorative t-shirts where there should be cupcakes – what kind of bakery is this anyway?

Disappointed, I trudged back to the front counter to question the clerk, and my expression must have been familiar. The clerk said we live to see the looks on people’s faces.

People were regularly entering the store to buy delicious baked goods, only to find sharp-looking t-shirts.  Talk about clever marketing.  We ended up spending over $90 even though I felt somewhat taken advantage of.  The clerk being a good sport, provided us directions to an excellent Chinese restaurant with Red Chinese, i.e., the People’s restaurant motif.

If you read this far, I was successful the way Johnny CupCakes was in getting me into their store.  I believe I have some secrets to being a great stepfather, but I also think you know some of them.

I think all of us contributing together can come up with a fairly comprehensive list of stepffathering secrets. There’s a desperate need for articles regarding stepfathering.

Recently, when I did a Google search on stepfathering, the results came back “Do you mean stepmothering?”  I’m not sure why there is such an absence of information on the web for stepfathers, but with your help, we can change it.

It would mean a lot to the other stepfathers and me if you drop a comment. You can share your background and experience. It will be great to also let me know what articles and topics you’d like to see in the future. Thanks.
